Back from my annual silent retreat – Lessons learned

Once or twice a year, I like to rent a small apartment for a few days and reflect on my life, my goals and aspirations. March and September are my favorite time of year to go on a silent retreat. This year was no exception. A few weeks ago, I was having dinner with my family at my father’s place when someone asked us where we’d see ourselves in 5 years. I was very uncomfortable with the question, because for the first time in years, I had no idea. My hubby said he was hoping we’d still be together in 5 years, but of that I had no doubt. I know that I love him and that I still want to live my life with him in the forseable future. But professionally, where do I want to be? Do I still enjoy my career as an executive assistant? If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ve heard me say that Jeff Sanders is one of my favorite podcasters. But Jeff is not only a successful podcaster, he’s also an author! When I heard that he was coming up with his second book, The Free-Time Formula, I was eager to know what it was about. Jeff was kind enough to provide me with an advanced copy and I can’t wait to tell you all about it! Last year, Jeff published his second book, his first paperback ever published by a real publisher. It was titled The 5 A.M. Miracle and was basically a compilation of productivity advice. I did not care too much for the book at the time and gave it somewhat of a bad review. Over the years, there is one influencer I look up to most than others. Ex-CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishing, Michael Hyatt has grown quite a readership in the productivity and leadership sphere. His blog is ranked by Google in the top one-half percent of all blogs, scoring more than a million page views each month. Good planning ensures that all your projects are accounted for and that you get the ball rolling on your most important priorities. In today’s article, I’ll be sharing the planning process and workflow that I use on a weekly basis. Let’s jump in! My planning process is divided in 4 steps : Capture, Review, Plan, Do. Let’s take a look at each step. 1. Capture The capture step is probably the most important part of my planning process, and a founding principle of the Getting Things Done methodology. It consists of writing down each tasks and projects as soon as they show up. This allows your mind to stay free from retaining information constantly and to be able to see all your todo’s in a trusted system. Quarter planning – 5 steps to achieve more goals

Back in 2015, I had the habit of setting goals in January, resolutions of sorts. That year, I set more than 40 goals and was very committed, in the first two months… When my drive gradually dissolved, I started to cross off items from my list. I started making excuses. At the end of the year, I had accomplished 15 of those 40+ goals. Not a bad result, but not even close. I realized that I had two problems in my planning method. First, I set too many goals to be able to work on all of them. Second, most of the goals I set in January were no longer relevant in April. This is when I learned about quarter planning. Shortly before I read Michael Hyatt’s book Living Forward, I heard him talk about quarter planning on his podcast, This is your life. I was very intrigued.
